The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) recently introduced the use of the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) to ease the flow of traffic and improve safety on highways.

NHAI Chief General Manager (CGM) Akhilesh Srivastava mulled the ATMS to execute in part the Central government鈥檚 proposal to modernise India鈥檚 highways. The ATMS is a subdomain of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).
The ATMS employs a top-down management perspective that integrates equipment such as cameras and speed sensors, installed at various points along the road, with databases primarily to improve, ease, and organise the flux of traffic. The system gathers real-time data from those cameras and sensors, and relays it to a command centre for integration and processing. The functions of ATMS includes: real-time traffic monitoring, dynamic message sign (DMS) monitoring and control, traffic camera monitoring and control, traffic signal monitoring and control, active traffic management Cheap John Hayden Hat , arterial management, road weather information system, and many others.


The NHAI is currently focusing on installing Incident Management System (IMS), which is a core function of the ATMS. The IMS processed data on incidents such as grid locks and accidents from the components of the ATMS and requests the command centre to dispatch the matching facilities, such as ambulances, cranes, GPS-monitored patrol vehicles Cheap Ryan Hartman Hat , and more.


With the IMS, it is possible for authorities to deploy help within 15 minutes of the incident in cases of emergencies.
The autonomous highway agency, as a part of the ATMS, has also introduced a 24X7 national highways helpline 鈥?1033 鈥?for highway commuters. The emergency line will connect to the command centre, which will automatically dispatch the matching services from the IMS.
Also, in order to meet its objectives of easing traffic, enhancing road safety Cheap Brandon Saad Hat , providing real-time information and guidance to users, 24X7 assistance, and sending alerts on abnormal road and weather conditions, provides traffic officials with: information on handling of traffic; information regarding the coordinates of an accident; and, tools such as GPS to mobilise, monitor, and guide facilities such as ambulances and patrol vehicles.

The Indian highways until now have been in dire straits. According to government census, every year around 150,000 persons fall victim to road accidents on highways alone. The NHAI, in order to prevent any further casualties on the highways, through the IMS will position ambulances at every 50 km point on the stretch. The first phase of the ATMS (and IMS) has already been initiated in six States 鈥?Tamil Nadu Cheap Richard Panik Hat , Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, and Maharashtra 鈥?and also in the National Capital. Phase I will soon be extended to the States of Telangana and Karnataka.
